William Blake

William Blake : An Overview of his life and work.

William Blake was born on the 28th November 1757 in 28a Broad Street (now Broadwick Street), London. William Blake's birthplace is commerated by a plaque in Marshall Street at the base of William Blake House. 28a Broad Street stood at the corner of modern day Marshall Street and Broadwick Street.

William Blake grew up and went on to be, arguably, Britain's greatest poet and painter. His works include poetry, illuminated books, prints, and paintings.

William Blake has enjoyed a revival in modern times and his poetry has frequently been adapted and included by popular musicians, whilst his art has influenced and inspired modern fantasy art.

In his own lifetime, William Blake was not held in particular high esteem by his contemporaries. He lived in near poverty and struggled to find patrons for his art. He survived largely through his (and his wife's) own efforts and the support of a small number of loyal supporters.

William Blake is buried in Bunhill Fields, London and is closely associated with Soho, London where he was born, worked and lived.
