Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh Castle is Scotland's top visitor attraction with in excess of a million visitors every year. The castle charges for entry, expensive in my opinion, and tickets are available in advance and at the castle.

History of Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle's history goes back to 900 BC with archaeological evidence of humans using the land the castle stands on. About 600 AD there is the first reference in historical sources to the existence of a fortress on the site, Din Eidyn.

Edinburgh Castle provides what they call a Free Guided Tour, but of course you have already paid for it in your entrance ticket. The tour is useful for identifying interesting and obscure facts and the rich history of the castle.

sights to see at Edinburgh Castle

Sights to see at Edinburgh Castle include: The Great Hall, The Honours of Scotland (crown jewels), Mons Meg (a medieval siege gun), National war Museum Scotland, Prisons of war Exhibition, Royal Palace, Royal Scots Regimental Museum, Scottish National war Memorial, Saint Margaret's chapel, The Regimental Museum of the Royal Scots Dragoons, and the Stone of Destiny (which was the coronation seat of ancient Scottish kings).

Edinburgh Castle

So lots to see at Edinburgh castle, particularly if you have an interest in war and things military. Is it worth the price of admission? Well, if like me, you believe that these sort of National treasures already belong to the people, and should be accessible for free, or the least possible cost, than I guess not. Isn't the castle a "public library" of Scotland's Military History?
